Comb of a cock (HE)
Galliform species have a fleshy comb (crista carnosa) which in fact is an outgrow from the dermal and epidermal layers of the skin of the head. It can have various forms and shapes and usually is better developed in male than female animals. Colors can vary from bright red to deep purple, depending upon breed, hormonal and health condition and are caused by the presence of numerous sinus capillaries just underneath the epidermis.
