Longitudinal section of the follicle and calamus of a grown contour feather of a chicken (HE): detail of the dermis of the follicle
The dermis of the follicle is a dense irregular connective tissue composed mainly of collagen fibers but also numerous elastic fibers are present. The dermis can be divided in an inner layer of highly flattened cells and an outer layer of less flattened cells. Tendons of the feather muscles ramify into the elastic fibers of the dermis.
