Postovulatory follicle of a chicken (HE)
In birds, no corpus luteum is formed after ovulation. The postovulatory follicle regresses, the cells of the granulosa layer and thecal layer become vacuolated but until the follicular wall regresses completely, the granulosa cells remain active in producing progesterone.
