Left carotid body of a chicken (HE): overview
Each carotid body is a round to oval body that consists of a mass of epithelioid cells surrounded by a thick capsule. The capsule is composed especially of collagen fibers and few elastic fibers. The epithelioid cells are organized in mostly a double mass in which the two parts are separated by a connective tissue septum. There is no further division in smaller lobules.
