As in mammals, the avian cornea consists of five layers: the anterior epithelium (epithelium corneae externum), the anterior limiting membrane (lamina limitans superficialis) or Bowman’s membrane, the corneal stroma (substantia propria corneae), the posterior limiting membrane (lamina limitans profunda) or Descemet’s membrane and the posterior epithelium (epithelium corneae internum).
