Small scale (scutella) on the tarsometatarsus of a chicken (HE)

The hard keratin of the stratum corneum only covers the outer surface around the sulci and doesn’t protrude above it.  The sulci are much wider and the soft keratin is less spongy than in between the bigger scales.
