Cross section of the left parathyroid and thyroid gland of an adult chicken (HE): overview
Birds possess two to four parathyroid glands (glandulae parathyroideae), located left and right of the trachea, caudal of the thyroid gland, close to the division of the truncus brachiocephalicus into the arteria subclavia and arteria carotis communis.
In Gallus species, the cranial and caudal parathyroids (parathyroids III and IV) are fused to form one single round encapsuled organ (as demonstrated on the micrograph above) or are enclosed together within the same capsule.
