Left ultimobranchial body of a laying hen (HE): dorsal overview
The ultimobranchial bodies, ultimobranchial glands (glandulae ultimobranchiales) or ultimobranchial organs, are paired ‘organs’ that lie closely associated to the parathyroid glands (parathyroid IV), dorsocranial of the bifurcation of the brachiocephalic artery (truncus brachiocephalicus) in the common carotid artery (a. carotis communis) and the subclavian artery (a. subclavia) on both sides of the trachea.
The ultimobranchial bodies develop from the 5th or 6th pharyngeal pouch.
