The endocrine cells in the islets of Langerhans are polygonal cells, arranged in cords or irregular rows that are surrounded by a network of sinusoid like blood capillaries. Although delta cells are smaller and beta cells occur in beta islets only, it is hard making distinction between the different cell types on routine histological stains.
