Active testis of an adult pigeon (HE):  disintegrating cells

The nuclei of the interstitial cells above have a slightly pycnotic appearance. Towards the end of the active period, the production of testosterone ceases, the interstitial cells will become depleted of lipids and cholesterol and start to disintegrate.
