Median eminence of the pituitary gland of a pigeon (HE)
The median eminence (eminentia mediana) is the rostro-ventral floor of the third ventricle and extends between the optic chiasm and the infundibular stalk. In pigeons, the median eminence is rather thin and has a smooth surface. Externally, the median eminence is covered by the pars tuberalis of the adenohypophysis. In between both, a complex primary capillary network is present.
The division of the median eminence in an anterior and posterior median eminence in some bird species is based on an independent blood supply in both zones.
