Detail of the median eminence of the pituitary gland of a pigeon (HE)
The median eminence comprises three layers: an ependymal layer that lines the recessus infundibularis, a fiber layer that is composed of nerve fibers that run towards the neural lobe and that contains a variable number of ‘free’ glial cells or pituicytes, and an glandular or palisade layer that contains cytoplasmatic processes of the ependymal and glial cells. Pituicytes play a role in the storage and release of the hormones. Aggregations of neurosecretory material, the so called Herring bodies can be present in all layers of the median eminence.
