Lens of a chicken embryo: detail 2
Lens fibers in the annular pad are radially arranged whereas in the lens body, fibers lie parallel to the optical axis. The annular pad and vesicula lentis form a hydrostatic mechanism for transmitting pressure from the ciliary processes to the lens body.
The lens is surrounded by a capsule (capsula lentis). The lens capsule is composed of thin collagen fibers embedded in an amorphous glycoprotein-matrix. In the anterior part, a simple cuboidal epithelium is present just underneath the capsule.
